That’s exactly what happened in one Austin suburb, where one man has left his neighbors stunned—and some of them quite unhappy—after giving his house a makeover in bright Pepto-Bismol pink.
No HOA, No Problem
In many U.S. neighborhoods, Homeowners Associations (HOAs) exist to ensure a uniform look among properties and manage shared spaces. But Emilio Rodriguez deliberately purchased his home in Pflugerville, Texas because there was no HOA—and that meant total creative freedom.
And he used it.
“I love this house. I don’t know why people don’t like it,” Emilio told CBS17, as he proudly admired his vibrant paint job.
Originally beige, the home now stands out in unmistakable pink—and Emilio has no intention of stopping. In fact, he plans to keep painting more parts of the property in the same bold hue.
A Color That Sparks Joy
The reaction from the neighborhood has been mixed, with some concerned about how the unconventional choice might affect property values.
But for Emilio, who is wheelchair-bound due to a car accident and ongoing health issues, the color has brought something more important than curb appeal—it brings him happiness.
He says pink is his favorite color, and painting the house this way helps keep his spirits up. Plus, in his view, it adds to Austin’s famous motto: Keep Austin Weird.

While the bright pink may be jarring at first, some see it as a charming quirk. One person remarked that homes like Emilio’s are great landmarks—friends, family, and delivery drivers will never miss it.
