Seeing him doubled over in pain is heartbreaking, and picturing his suffering brought us to tears – it’s truly devastating.

Spencer the Brave: From Abused and Abandoned to Deeply Loved

It’s hard for dog lovers to make sense of cruelty toward innocent animals. Why anyone would harm a defenseless creature is beyond understanding. Sadly, not all dogs get a gentle start in life—and Spencer was one of them. His first year was marked by pain, neglect, and unthinkable suffering.

Spencer, a gentle Doberman, was found wandering dangerously close to a freeway in South Carolina. He had apparently been struck by a car and was desperately searching for scraps—scavenging for roadkill to survive.

Fortunately, compassionate strangers stepped in and brought Spencer to Paws & Claws in Columbia, where he was immediately given the urgent care he needed. His injuries were clear: a broken back, likely from the vehicle that hit him, and a look in his eyes that spoke volumes.

The veterinary team noticed something else—his ears had been cropped in a cruel and botched home procedure. X-rays revealed something even more horrifying: a cluster of razor-sharp bird bones trapped in his stomach, threatening to rupture it from the inside. His body was covered in cuts and wounds, some requiring stitches.

It was clear that Spencer had endured a life of abuse. Whether he escaped or was heartlessly dumped, one thing was certain—he had been left to survive completely on his own. But there was a glimmer of hope. With the help of the VCA Animal Specialty Center of South Carolina, the team discovered he could still feel his legs. If all went well, surgery might repair his spine and help him walk again.

Miraculously, the spinal surgery was a success. Spencer began the long road to recovery, and doctors were thrilled to find the sharp bones in his stomach were beginning to pass naturally—safely and without complication. At last, things were beginning to turn around.

Thanks to dedicated caregivers and physical therapy, Spencer made remarkable progress. At first, he needed full support to walk, but it didn’t take long before he was moving on his own. His spirit was unbreakable, and so was his will to live. Staff describe him as joyful, full of life, and in great health—a dog who’s ready to truly enjoy the life he was almost denied.

And there’s more good news: Spencer has finally found his forever home!

This brave boy now lives with a loving family and even has furry siblings to keep him company. His new parents manage his Facebook page, where you can follow his joyful new life—a well-deserved happy ending for a dog who never gave up.
