Five days after disappearing, a dog is finally found and rescued from an underground rabbit hole.

A heartbroken dog owner has finally been reunited with her cherished pet after the pup was discovered trapped inside a rabbit hole, five days after vanishing.
Sarah Mclellan, 33, was devastated when her dog Ralph went missing during a walk near their home in Haworth, West Yorkshire, England last week.

In the days that followed, Sarah and her husband searched tirelessly for their wire-haired Dachshund. They enlisted the help of local volunteers, posted in “Lost Dog” Facebook groups, and even had someone build a dedicated website to help bring Ralph home — but nothing worked.
“The weather on Friday was awful — it was bitterly cold and we couldn’t find him anywhere,” Sarah recalled. “You start imagining the worst… Had he drowned? Was he hurt? It was unbearable.”
Sarah said her young son kept asking where Ralph was, opening the front door and calling out for him. “It was absolutely heartbreaking,” she said. “We could only tell him that Daddy was still out looking.”
Then, in a remarkable twist of fate, Ralph’s sister Edie managed to sniff him out while on a walk with Sarah’s husband on Monday.
They discovered Ralph trapped about five feet underground, stuck inside a dense network of rabbit tunnels just a short distance from home. It took two hours of delicate digging to reach him and pull him to safety.

“Those rabbit holes were like a labyrinth. He must’ve gone too deep and couldn’t find his way out,” explained Sarah. “He made himself a little space to rest, but he couldn’t escape. And when we finally got him out — he just had a quick wee and acted like nothing had happened!”
“When I got home and saw him standing in the kitchen, I was in complete shock,” she added. “It didn’t feel real.”
Although Ralph had lost some weight during his underground ordeal, he didn’t suffer any major injuries.
“He’s completely worn out and his nails are really short from trying to dig his way out,” Sarah said. “But otherwise, he’s okay. He’s tired and thinner, but he’ll recover.”
Now that Ralph is home safe, Sarah hopes their story will offer reassurance to others still searching for lost pets.

“It was such a rollercoaster — I still can’t believe he’s back,” she said. “I stayed up until 1 a.m. last night just holding him.”
“He does love chasing rabbits, and this time he just took it too far. Hopefully he’s learned not to go tunneling again.”
