Dog chained his entire life is finally liberated.

For more than ten years, Chico lived a life of isolation. Adopted by a family in rural North Carolina, the pit bull was confined to a cramped yard strewn with debris. He had no companionship and was deprived of basic care and affection.

His heartbreaking situation eventually caught the eye of a concerned neighbor, Gricel Guerrero, who tried repeatedly to intervene. She urged the family to seek veterinary care for Chico and take him on regular walks, but they insisted he was fine, claiming he was aggressive and needed to be restrained at all times.
Guerrero watched helplessly for years as the dog remained chained and forgotten. “It broke my heart every time I saw him out there alone,” she said. But finally, she reached her limit and decided something had to be done.

She began contacting rescue groups, but most were either too far away or unwilling to take on the case. Eventually, she connected with Diva’s Safe Haven & Thrift, a rescue willing to help. Once she secured a place for Chico, she approached his owners one last time. After a brief conversation, they agreed to surrender him.
Thanks to Guerrero’s persistence, Chico was finally freed and brought to the rescue, where he began receiving the care he so badly needed. He was found to be mostly deaf and suffering from multiple tumors and arthritis in his back legs. Now, he will live out his golden years at Diva’s, surrounded by loving caretakers and other rescued animals.

Despite all he’s endured, Chico has embraced his new life with a gentle spirit. The staff at Diva’s say he’s a sweet, well-mannered dog who’s happy to welcome new rescues and share his time with those around him. His resilience is a reminder of just how strong and forgiving animals can be.
