From “Devast8” to a Fresh Start: How a Face Tattoo Changed One Man’s Life

Mark Cropp, a young man from New Zealand, made a decision one night that would haunt him for years to come. While serving a two-year, three-month prison sentence for a failed drug deal, Mark and his brother drank homemade alcohol and, in a drunken stupor, decided to give Mark a face tattoo using DIY ink made from melted plastic utensils and toothpaste. The result? The word “Devast8” permanently etched across his jaw and lower face.

What started as a reckless night in prison turned into a lifelong challenge. After his release, Mark was determined to turn his life around. He wanted to support his wife and daughter, find a stable job, and become a respected member of society. But his face tattoo—not his criminal record—became the biggest obstacle to his fresh start.

The Struggle to Move Forward

Mark’s tattoo made it nearly impossible for him to find employment. Despite his work history and willingness to start anew, potential employers couldn’t look past the bold, jarring ink on his face. In an interview with Daily Mail Australia, Mark explained the meaning behind the tattoo:

“You know there was a long time there where I would devastate everything I touched. I would end up devastating everyone I met or got close to,” he said. “They would be disappointed with something I had done or said—I was always hearing ‘that’s devastating.’ Once it was started, I thought, I can’t go back on it now. I wish I had stopped while the outline was there to be quite honest. Before I knew it, I had this on my face… It was swollen like a bloody pumpkin.”

A Cry for Help on Social Media

Determined to remove the tattoo, Mark turned to social media for help. Laser removal was too expensive, so he posted a heartfelt plea on Facebook, sharing his story and asking for employment and a chance to start over. His post quickly went viral, catching the attention of thousands, including the team at Sacred Tattoo, a tattoo shop in Auckland.

Moved by Mark’s story, Sacred Tattoo offered to remove his tattoo free of charge. Their generosity gave Mark the opportunity he needed to rebuild his life.

A New Beginning

With the tattoo removed, Mark’s prospects improved dramatically. He landed a job at PR Contracting, a scaffolding company, where he now earns $22 an hour. For Mark, this job represents more than just a paycheck—it’s a chance to provide for his family and leave his past behind.

Mark’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact of second chances and the importance of community support. Thanks to the kindness of strangers and his own determination, Mark has been able to transform his life and create a brighter future for himself and his loved ones.

We’re thrilled that Mark has been given the opportunity to start anew. Share this inspiring story with your family and friends to spread the message of hope and redemption!
