In 2020, archaeologists in northern Italy made a breathtaking discovery beneath a vineyard: an extraordinarily well-preserved mosaic floor dating back to the 3rd century BC. “We have been searching for this mosaic since at least 1922,” said Alberto Manicardi, head of excavation operations. “We knew it was there but couldn’t accurately determine its location.”
The breakthrough came just before the COVID-19 pandemic when a team from the Superintendent of Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape of Verona began renewed excavations.
